Videos on the settings for a Synology to play nice with the firewall settings between the two would be great. Since you can do VPN on NAS and/or UDM, Port forwarding for some items like quickconnect and understanding how to set these up properly for remote connection and interplay would help a lot. Also thanks for putting out good quality content, your videos are easy to follow and help me wrap my head around what's going on in each area vs others I have tried watching.

If you can explain how to set them up so that people on the guest network can still let's say Chrome cast to like a TV and things like washer and dryers can still send info to a phone on the main network that would dope!

In most cases, 0-255. 10.0.0.0/24 and 10.255.255.0/24 are valid IP subnets, but some manufacturers won't allow it. Of course, if you are using a different subnet mask, the valid digits may change.

Im so confused as i was going to buy the 923+. I currently have a single 8tb backup drive for my new YT channel. Im shooting between 50 and 100 gigs per video then editing. I want to save the originals for a year or more before deleting so i can make shorts or look back. Now im wondering if the 1522+ mentioned wouldn't be a better option. Its a hundred more but is it that much better? Looking for a solution that i wont outgrow in the next 3-5 years. I plan to outfit with 18tb drives.

FYI, your screen screenshot of the switch was of the non-POE version which is cheaper than the one you are using. That might cause some confusion for people.

I have a question, a little off topic... I broke my phone which was used for MFA with my Unifi Owner Admin acct. I did not have a backup or secondary method to login (no email or sms). I had to create a new admin acct, however no longer Owner Admin. Can you think of anyway I can hack this system to allow me to turn off MFA or somehow get around the MFA so I can access my super user acct? Instead of resetting/formatting the entire system... Fyi thats what unifi support says.

It is safe to use ssh connections across the internet without a VPN. Safeguards such as the recommended encryption, key-cycling, safe configurations are fine.

I do not think this would now work on DSM v7.2 given that by default ssh shell sessions are only available to admin accounts.

The passphrase on the private key is intended to secure the private key from those that do not know the passphrase. It does not of itself help secure the network connection.

There is no need to edit the sshd_config file. The commented out options in the unmodified file represent the default configuration of the server. So if the keyword is commented out but is showing the value you want, you do not need to change the file.

You can't hack an NAS if you can't access it. Consider connecting the NAS Ethernet cable to a separate gigabit (or 10 giga) switch which can be powered on/off with a KASA smart Wi-Fi plug (like the HS103). Open the KASA app on your phone and turn on the gigabit (or 10 giga) switch, supplying the LAN connection from your network to the NAS. Connectivity takes only a few seconds. When you are finished using the NAS, turn off the smart Wi-Fi plug on your smartphone. This can be done from anywhere on the planet and you now have created unrelated layers of security. Even Alexa can turn on/off KASA (or equivalent) switches. Also, when someone turns on/off the LAN connection to the NAS, you will know about it through notifications from Synology (if enabled). If used in conjunction with SpaceRex tips in this video, you are no longer the low hanging fruit for hackers.

I would love to have USB4 40Gbps connections on my desktop to take advantage of an external NVME drive. However, most PCs only have USB3 5Gbps or 10Gbps connections, so they could not take advantage of all that speed. However, most PCs also only have 1Gbps ethernet, so no NAS would be be as fast either.

This is a great video. It's just the sort of thing I'm looking for when there's a new product announcement--less what does it do, more who is it for. :) From this video, as a home/home office user with a moderately complicated but low-user network, it sounds like the UDM SE would still be the ideal rack-mount product for me. I've got 1 Gbps fiber now, and could eventually move to 2 Gbps, and it sounds like the UDM SE would be more than enough for anything I could conceivably want to do. (Right now, I'm on an OPNSense firewall and a QNAP core switch, using a Unifi AP and Pro Max 24. I envision switching to a Dream Machine SE someday to centralize my network management, but I'm not in any hurry to do it yet.) At this point, now that they've effectively set their price points for various flavors of Dream Machine, it'll be interesting to see how future iterations of the SE/Pro Max progress in terms of hardware performance. I'm curious who isn't yet being served by the actual switching capacity and upstream/downstream link speed of something like the UDM Pro Max.

As for WireGuard. I have a simple script that creates configuration files, this part is easy. I agree about debugging though. But once you setup your server right and tested against 1 client it should work for everyone else. And if it's not then those are usually some ports on client side or some other program that pushes its own dns and clears up others. I disagree about interface problem. It's pretty straightforward on all OSes. There was some problem with GUI on Linux under Gnome-Shell but KDE worked fine. On Windows GUI is ok, it clearly shows whether it is active or not. The only downsides i know of are on Windows sometimes it's not connected after you shutdown(because it doesn't play well with Windows hybrid shutdown option) and GUI isn't shown if you click on it, so you have to kill the process and start the client again. And on Android if you've added it within Android quick settings it starts automatically all the time, so it's better not to do it and simply use icon launcher.

I think hdd makers ahould lockout the Synology nas and say we are the ones that say no you. We maker you drives and can make more money outisde the contract with you.

Hey SpaceRex I have a Synology Nas Ds220j and I was wondering is there a way to defrag the drives on it. I do photography and my drives are running slow because i just moved over 10K plus photos, it took a while for it to index but now when i try and access stuff like synology photos on my iPhone or iPad, or even if i try to open the synology photos web browser. My photos don’t load, or some will have thumbnails and sometimes my folders that i created take a long time to open. Sorry for the long post, but i am in desperate need LOL. I tried looking everywhere to see if i can find out how to defrag on the synology nas i currently have and i cannot find anything, and i really can’t at this time afford to go out and buy a new NAS Any help or thoughts would be super helpful. Thank you :)

Worked great.... but how do i update the Unifi controller?

I have a nasty WD EX4100 with 4 x 4T WD Nas red drives and one extra 4T .The Nas lost the raid configuration and now I am trying to recover the data. I opened a case in WD but the did not give any help, the only think are telling me is that I need to find a way to make a data recovery.

You do NOT need to send and receive email directly from your own server. In fact as he points out - its not a good idea. So you simply relay your mail (both in and out) through a third-party provider with dynamic-dns (setup an IP updater). There are many great options that filter and protect your mail-flow like mxguarddog and dnsexit and you can them only accept mail from/to your dynamic-dns FQDN
